The 12th elective conference for the African National Congress (ANC)'s greater Tshwane region is set to kick off on Friday, following a failed last-minute bid to interdict it.

The conference was initially set down for November; however, it was postponed by the ANC's provincial leadership.

This was after a group of ANC Tshwane members complained about irregularities regarding the nomination process at branch level.

The elective conference is themed 'Renew, Rebuild and Unite'; however, the event comes at a time when there are deep divisions within the ANC caucus.

There have been allegations of rigging of the branch nomination process, while some feel those who have been delaying the conference through disputes and court challenges are afraid they are going to lose.

The top position of chairperson is set to be hotly contested with incumbent Eugene Modise, also the Deputy Mayor in Tshwane, seeking a second term.

He will be facing stiff competition from the ANC's regional spokesperson, Bafuze Yabo.

The conference is set to conclude on Sunday.
