Cape Town gears up for Speed Classic debut on 25, 26 October

This October, the twists and turns of the iconic Philip Kgosana Drive will come alive with the roar of racing machines and timeless classics as the Speed Classic Cape Town makes its debut.

The hill climb race, which takes place on 25 and 26 October, will give spectators an unprecedented opportunity to see an incredible mix of cars at full throttle. Combining high-octane motorsport with a sophisticated lifestyle experience, the Speed Classic promises two days of unmatched action.

“We are proud to support the Speed Classic Cape Town, and as a city, we love to host world-class events. I believe this race has the potential to grow into a real mainstay event in Cape Town and become a prestigious occasion that will bring visitors from around the world and showcase our city globally.”
- Geordin Hill-Lewis, Mayor - Cape Town
“With just over six weeks to go, the excitement is palpable as we prepare to stage a truly unique race. We have received tremendous support from the City of Cape Town thus far and look forward to bringing another world-class event to the Mother City.”
- Garth Mackintosh, Event Director - Speed Classic Cape Town

Motoring heritage takes centre stage on Saturday, 25 October, when 70 Classic Cars – including some of the rarest vehicles on earth – take to the tarmac. Some of the standout cars in action include:

  • Stuart Mackay-Davidson: 1980 Ferrari 308 GTB, one of only five in South Africa.
  • Harry Tayler: 1930 Bentley 4.5L Le Mans, the sole known example in the country.
  • Charles Arton: 1979 March 79A, a bespoke-built race car for Formula Atlantic in South Africa.

The driver line-up adds further excitement. South African racer Franco Scribante will pilot a South African 6 hours winning 1970 Chevron B19, a rare prototype with only around 30 ever built. Franco will be joined by Silvio Scribante, who will be behind the wheel of a 1970s Ford Capri Perana. International entries include Swiss drivers Serge Endress in a 1965 Lola T70 Spyder, one of fewer than 50 worldwide, and Matthias Annefield in a 1971 Ford Capri Perana.

The Ford Capri Perana is a rare factory-supported muscle car unique to South Africa, born from Basil Green's genius engineering in collaboration with Ford. While 500 were originally made, only around 100 cars still exist.

The former F1 driver, 24-time 24 Hour Le Mans competitor, and winner of the 1988 race, the legendary Dutch race driver Jan Lammers, will also travel to Cape Town to race on Saturday.

“Classic cars are like art, and you just cannot replace them. They were designed in a bygone era and have become collectors’ items. What makes the Speed Classic Cape Town so special is that on Classic Car Saturday, we are bringing these cars out of collections and onto the track, and are inviting collectors to showcase their cars.”

On Sunday, 26 October, the attention shifts to spectacular supercars and speed machines that will battle it out in the King of the Mountain showdown.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Farouk Dangor: Ferrari SF90 Stradale – one of only 11 registered in the country, and one of the fastest road legal Ferraris ever built, going 0-100kph in 2.5 seconds.
  • Greg Parton: Lamborghini Aventador. One of the fastest naturally aspirated V12 road cars ever built. Only a handful of variants in the country.
  • Pieter Zeelie: Toyota MR2 Super GT. Simola 2025 King of the Hill Champion
  • Dawie Joubert: Lotus Exige powered by a twin-turbo Ferrari V8 engine. Simola 2024 King of the Hill Champion.
  • Franco Scribante: Nissan GTR35, known as 'The Sheriff', with over 1500hp. Simola 2023 King of the Hill Champion.
  • Marcel Angel: Ferrari 488 GT3. The car has raced overseas in European championships, and Marcel is a multiple SA champion.
  • Byron Mitchell: Reynard Formula VW. It was the official German F3 car in 2001. Byron won the Simola 2025 King of the Hill title in single-seaters and sports cars.
  • Connor Kilbride: Ligier JS53-Evo 2. A fast and nimble prototype weighing only 570kg. An exciting car which has never been documented to compete in a SA Hillclimb event, making this the first one to do so.

According to Steyn Momberg Speed Classic Cape Town Project Director, safety is of utmost importance when organising an event like this.

“Our course plan is approved by Motorsport South Africa, and we have the best safety equipment on hand. All our safety barriers and catch fences were used for Formula E, and we have the same disaster management team from the City of Cape Town that managed Formula E.”
- Steyn Momberg, Project Director - Speed Classic Cape Town
“From the beginning, we have always wanted the Speed Classic Cape Town to be more than a motorsport event. We also have a strong lifestyle element and want this to be something for all of Cape Town. We have everything from exclusive lifestyle experiences and grandstands, to a race village where we’ll have activations, kiddies’ areas, big screens with live feeds and great food options, making it a perfect day out for the whole family.”
- Steyn Momberg, Project Director - Speed Classic Cape Town
