The Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of police corruption made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is meeting on Friday to finalise its list of additional witnesses.

The proposed list of additional witnesses includes President Cyril Ramaphosa, disbarred advocate, Malesela Teffo, as well as former Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa.

Ad Hoc Committee members said some of the additional witnesses have been mentioned several times during the Madlanga Commission hearings, taking place in Pretoria, and could provide the Parliament inquiry with relevant information.

The updated witness list currently has 12 new names who include the president, members of Parliament (MPs) Dianne Kohler Barnard and Fadiel Adams, and the former head of the Hawks, Advocate Godfrey Lebeya.

Former National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole is also on the list of additional witnesses to account for his role as the country’s top cop from 2017 to 2022.

Committee member Ian Cameron said this week that Sitole has a lot to answer, especially about former police Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli, who was dismissed from the police and later found guilty of kidnapping and assault.

“The specific reason is with regards to his role in approving the retirement of Richard Mdluli, despite all the transgressions and discrepancies in previous years.”

The committee expects to start its hearings on 7 October with Mkhwanazi as its first witness.
