JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Correctional Services’ chief financial officer has been axed over dodgy COVID-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) procurements.

The move follows a probe by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

In February 2021, the SIU recommended disciplinary action be taken against four senior officials including then CFO Dzivhuluwani Ligege, who had been accused of awarding millions of rands worth of PPE contracts to his friends and family.

One of them subsequently resigned but the department’s Singabakho Nxumalo has confirmed that three underwent an internal disciplinary process.

"Two officials, being the chief financial officer; and director for procurement, were found guilty, with a dismissal sanction, whilst the other manager, director for logistics, was found not guilty and is back at work."
