Experts on Andy Mothibi' appointment: 'NPA needs someone with a backbone'

Independent legal and crime experts have backed Advocate Andy Mothibi’s appointment as National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).

President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Mothibi after several candidates interviewed for the position were not successful. 

Last month, an advisory panel interviewed six candidates for the role.

Independent crime specialist Mxolisi Slevana believes Mothibi might have what it takes to transform the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) into a fully functioning entity, but admitted it would not be an easy task.

"Because of all the corruption that entangles the NPA itself, as well as the political interference, it will take quite a bit of time. It needs somebody with a real backbone I’m not talking about someone with cartilage, it needs someone with a backbone who can turn it around."

Melusi Xulu of Donda Attorneys said Mothibi had already shown his seriousness in combating corruption, having recently delivered a public report on the multi-billion-rand Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal.

"If he can bring that same drive to every matter he handles and considering his other records within the SIU [Special Investigating Unit], I believe he will be the right person to work and deliver."

Mothibi replaces Advocate Shamila Batohi, who was appointed NDPP in February 2019.
