JOHANNESBURG - A fire has damaged the control room of a Palm Ridge substation, plunging the area into darkness.
The ripple control room caught fire on Thursday morning, with thick smoke seen from the building as emergency crews raced to the scene.
Ekurhuleni disaster and emergency services say the blaze was contained by a team of 17 firefighters, who isolated the power and prevented further damage to the substation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the city’s electrical engineers.
Officials have warned residents to report any further emergencies to the city’s call centre as crews work to restore power.
Ekurhuleni EMS spokesperson William Ntladi said: "Intense damage was experienced inside the ripple control room housing the electric breakers. The actual cause of the fire is undetermined and is still under investigation by the fire safety officers together with the city of Ekurhuleni electrical department engineers."
