Boksburg blast: Victims’ families institute R65m lawsuit against entities they believe could’ve prevented tragedy

JOHANNESBURG - Families of the victims from the Boksburg gas tanker explosion tragedy have instituted a R65 million lawsuit against entities they believe could have prevented the tragedy.

In 2022, on Christmas Eve, a truck carrying about 6,000 litres of liquid petroleum gas got stuck under a low-lying bridge on Hospital Road.

The truck exploded, killing 41 people and injuring 26 others.

There are three entities cited in the lawsuit by LHL Attorneys, which is representing the families of the 67 victims.

Infinite Fleet Transport is listed as the first, as the company that hired the driver.

The company is accused of negligence and not having proper monitoring systems.

Labour broker Innovative Staffing Solutions is accused of failing in its duties to ensure the driver of the tanker was properly trained in the transporting of hazardous items.

The last defendant, the City of Ekurhuleni, is being held responsible for the poor signage on the bridge and the poor conduct of its fire department, which did not properly evacuate people.
