Gun Free SA said that law enforcement needs to do more to trace the origin of illegal guns.

Over the past three months, nine AK-47 assault rifles were confiscated by police from ordinary citizens in Cape Town.

In August, two were found in Gugulethu, six in Bellville last month, and one in Manenberg on Wednesday.

Executive Director of Gun Free SA, Stanley Maphosa, said that to avoid losing track of guns,  better stockpile management should to be implemented by security companies and the SAPS.

“The solution really is not just taking the guns out, the solution is finding out where the leaks are and preventing, because if you just collect them, and the next day you collect them, there are reports of collection, collection every day, we are worried about where is the leakage.”
