On Wednesday 30 April, Kevin Kiewitz was officially announced as the new president of Western Province Rugby Football Union, securing 54% of the votes.
Kiewitz is a Bellville South local, University of the Western Cape alumni, and attorney - but his newest role as the president of the Western Province Rugby Football Union leads a new executive tasked with steering the union through a crucial rebuilding phase.
Kiewitz says he's proud of his Bellville South roots because he wouldn't be where he is today without them.
"Bellville South has shaped me into the person I am today... through the church I attended there, to the rugby club that I played for."
- Kevin Kiewitz, President - Western Province Rugby Football Union
Kiewitz explains his plan for the rugby club...
"The main business of Western Province Union must be the administration of playing the game of rugby - so we are saddled with the task of ensuring that the game for clubs, schools, high schools, primary schools and universities are government administered to create opportunities and create that community environment where rugby is a home for all... it needs to be an inclusive game, it needs to be a game where everyone can come together and grow as individuals and share."
- Kevin Kiewitz, President - Western Province Rugby Football Union
Kiewitz also says that commercialising the community arm of the union, otherwise overlooked in the past, might be part of the future plan.
"Where we have maybe missed the boat in the past, our concentration was more on the commercial arm of professional rugby instead of commercialising the community game."
- Kevin Kiewitz, President - Western Province Rugby Football Union
"One of the most important things is to ensure that we bring trust back into the room, so there can be brand association with people that want to be associated with the club game and community rugby, so we can commercialise that to the benefit of the community and our rugby players."
