JOHANNESBURG - Eyewitness News has learned that Rand Water executive Teboho Joala, who was killed in a brazen hit, had been receiving death threats for some time now.
Joala, who served as the entity's chief shared services officer, was shot and killed in full view of over 70 primary school pupils in Zakariyya Park, south of Johannesburg.
The attack happened during a Rand Water Back to School campaign on Monday.
Eyewitness News understands that Joala was provided with a bodyguard following the threats, but his protector was also killed during the shooting.
Joala was the African National Congress’s (ANC) former spokesperson in the City of Tshwane.
The party's Lesego Makhubela said Joala's murder was a declaration of war.
"The murder of Comrade Teboho Joala and his protector, as well as the tragic shooting of the City of Johannesburg’s chief whip and others, is a great tragedy which has inflicted scars on innocent children and teachers who witnessed it."
