As political parties gear up for the upcoming local government elections, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is working on a coordinated plan to win hung municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The IFP is in full control of 19 municipalities, including district municipalities, and seven co-governed municipalities.

It’s now adamant that it wants full majority control in the province.

On Wednesday, party leaders welcomed former uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party secretary general Dr Bongani Mncwango to the party.

In 2021, the IFP came out as the biggest contender in the local government polls, taking over several municipalities across KZN.

And since then, it has also won over 40 wards during various by-elections.

The party said it has identified more municipalities of interest ahead of the much-anticipated polls.

Party leader Velenkosini Hlabisa said hung municipalities will be a key focus for their electioneering work.

“We were taking them from other political parties, which is a sign of growth, a sign of being a choice of the people of this country. We are looking at a more numbers of municipalities under our control in the upcoming local government elections. I wouldn’t want to mention them by name because I might awaken people who are asleep.”

Hlabisa said the party’s by-election performance is a good build-up to the municipal polls.
