New Madlanga Commission witness to testify remotely and off-camera

The witness set to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday and Wednesday will do so anonymously.

This follows an application by News24 and Daily Maverick to oppose having the witness's testimony being heard in-camera.

Commission chair, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, ruled on Tuesday morning that one of the evidence leaders will act as an intermediary for the witness.

This means the witness will testify remotely and answer questions, which will be fed into the headset of evidence leader Advocate Thabang Pooe, who will then repeat the witness's answer.

An agreement has not been reached for the witness's testimony to be heard on Thursday and Friday, as a ruling will be made on that on Wednesday.

Madlanga explains: "The witness will testify remotely and off-camera. The answers of the witness to questions posed by the evidence leaders will be repeated publicly through an intermediary, whose voice will be broadcast live, as he or she will repeat the witness's words."
