CAPE TOWN - Parliament has continued processing the contentious Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill despite objections.
The National Council of Province’s education and technology, sports, arts and culture committee on Wednesday received a briefing from its legal advisor on the bill before its adoption
Chairperson Mamagase Nchabeleng said someone has to ensure all processes are constitutional like the Head of Department (HOD), according to the Bill.

"This is to ensure somebody is responsible to ensure that there are not going to be any discriminatory policies in our basic education and training schools."
However, the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s basic education spokesperson Bax Nodada says the DA is against the BELA Bill because it disempowers schools by centralising school admission policies to HODs.
