CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) said the chairperson of Parliament’s portfolio committee on higher education has rejected its calls to hold Minister Buti Manamela accountable for the latest Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA) appointments.
Parties have questioned whether Manamela followed the right process when appointing administrators to turn around three SETAs and have called on him to explain his move.
Last week, Manamela appointed the administrators to the Construction SETA (CETA), Services SETA (SSETA), and Local Government SETA (LGSETA), respectively.
There are growing calls that Minister Buti Manamela should urgently explain his appointments of administrators to the SETAs and whether he consulted with the relevant authority as required by legislation.
But DA MP Karabo Khakhau said her requests for a meeting have been rebuffed by committee chairperson Tebogo Letsie.
"He has still written to me to reject that Buti must appear before the committee together with the national skills authority.
But Letsie, said earlier that he’s asked Manamela to explain whether he followed procedures and informed the setas of his decision as required by law.
"That’s why I’ve written to the minister to explain so that at least we’re on the same page."
He said the committee plans to meet with Manamela on 12 September 2025 to discuss the matter.
