JOHANNESBURG - South Africa says it will use its upcoming G20 Presidency to ensure that the African continent scores big as emerging economies rush to meet their development goals.

This comes as South Africa prepares to assume the G20 Presidency in less than two months, making it the first African country to head the bloc of global powerhouses.

Director General at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation Zane Dangor says the country hopes to use its one-year term to reshape global governance.

He says this includes broadening and strengthening the participation of developing economies in international economic decision-making.

“What we need to do is reflect on how do we move from making statements to moving towards implementation on issues of indebtedness, how are we going to change the status of African countries form being highly indebted, to having the kind of local resource capabilities to drive local development. And so the issues of beneficiation will then come in and local resource mobilisation then becomes a reality.”
