A wandering elk, nicknamed Emil, that was spotted across Central Europe has been captured in Austria.
The animal’s three-month journey from Poland through Czechia and Slovakia has made him a social media star.
“He went across roads, swam streams, eventually he swam rivers… he did a four-country tour.”
– Adam Gilchrist, World View
Austrian authorities confirmed he was tranquilised for straying dangerously close to a highway and released close to the Czech border with other elk.
He was also fitted with a GPS tag in case he goes wandering again.

After getting dangerously close to the highway Emil has been tranquilized and transported to the czech border, where the closest population of moose live. He has also been tagged so hell be easier to follow. He didnt seem to mind the whole thing too much. https://t.co/ym0YKh90EJ pic.twitter.com/ptH1xt7u6G
