Manenberg Secondary School pupils upbeat about academic year despite gang violence fears

CAPE TOWN - Manenberg Secondary School in Cape Town has welcomed a full attendance of pupils on Wednesday despite safety concerns over gang violence in the area. 

Eyewitness News visited the school and caught up with pupils, who shared their expectations for the new academic year.

Grade 12 pupil, Kamesha Hendricks, said she had high expectations for the year ahead.

"My expectations for this year, they’re really, really big because it’s grade 12. I’m looking forward to getting really good marks."

Kamesha’s classmate, Tara-Lee Warely, said her aims were similar.

"My expectations for the year is just to get good results so that I can get into the top ten. I just want good marks so that I can achieve my goals."

Both learners said they felt safe at the school despite it being in a gang hotspot.
