JOHANNESBURG - South African journalists called on the international community to take urgent and immediate action to ensure the safety of all journalists in Gaza and the region.
Journalists gathered at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg on Sunday to honour colleagues killed while covering Israel's military offensive in Gaza.
The Israel-Gaza conflict has taken a severe toll on journalists since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack against Israel on 7 October.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, more than 80 reporters and media workers have been among the 27,000 killed since the conflict started.
Speaking at Sunday’s night vigil, journalist Qaanitah Hunter demanded justice for all media workers who have been targeted.
“We have a special responsibility as South Africans, as humans too, to stand in solidarity with our colleagues who are being killed and targeted, and whose names are here before you.”
