Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu and eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda will meet with residents from affected areas to provide a progress report on plans to restore water.

DURBAN - As the registration of voters ahead of the general elections continues in KwaZulu-Natal, national and local government will spend the day addressing a water crisis that’s hit parts of Durban north, including Verulam and Phoenix.

Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu and eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda will meet with residents from affected areas to provide a progress report on plans to restore water.

Last week, residents took to the streets demanding that water be restored.

On Saturday, Verulam saw the EFF’s commander-in-chief Julius Malema urging residents to register to vote in order to get the governing party out of power.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province is also keeping a watchful eye over these communities. Its provincial leader, Francois Rodgers, said that he believed that areas where his party enjoyed support would come out to register.

Rodgers said this current registration window seemed to be driving more people to polling stations.

"The voting stations that I have visited in eThekwini, in fact, seem busier than the first registration weekend, which is really encouraging," said Rodgers.
