EAST LONDON - While some are turning up at their local voting stations in the hope of using the upcoming general elections to effect change, there’s growing apathy within some quarters.
In the Eastern Cape, some who remain dissatisfied with the ANC feel they have no choice but to keep voting for it because it’s the only government they’ve known since the dawn of democracy.
Eyewitness News spoke to 70-year-old Thandoxolo Gwala in East London, a father of three graduates who have not been able to find jobs.
The Eastern Cape has the country’s highest unemployment rate, something that ordinary citizens feel acutely in the province.
Gwala said they had been searching for work opportunities over the past four years and he feels that not enough is being done to address the high unemployment rate.
The 70-year-old also has little faith in the ANC despite continuously voting to keep it in power.
Gwala said there was nothing worth voting for and that he voted just for the sake of it.
He said he will never stop voting for the ANC because it’s the party that he’s known since the dawn of democracy 30 years ago.
Meanwhile, the IEC said 10 voting stations remain closed across parts of the province.
