JANE FURSE - Some young people in Limpopo’s Jane Furse area, said they’re being held back by the worrying levels of voter apathy by their peers.

With South Africa now a few months away from its seventh democratic elections, a majority of the youth in the province are not registered to vote.

Some told Eyewitness News that unemployment, poverty and a decline in the delivery of basic services in the Sekhukhune Municipality had all hardened their attitude towards participating in the elections.

Twenty-two-year-old Thapelo Komani, a Jane Furse resident and an avid ANC supporter, is highly bothered by his peers’ attitude towards politics and voting.

Komani acknowledged that this may be caused by government’s continued failures over the past 30 years but said that young people need to be educated about the benefits of placing an X on the ballot paper.

"My peers don't want to vote this year. Their actions will have a negative impact on the country because young people are the future, we have to bring the change we need."

Just a few kilometers away from his village is an area where several young people have grown to resent the current government.

This group of disgruntled young men, who usually play a game of dice on the side of road, have boldly stated that they will not bother to cast their votes.
