The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has revealed that syndicates siphoned R2 billion from Tembisa Hospital through fraudulent tenders.

The SIU released an interim report detailing its investigation into corruption at the facility. The probe was prompted by whistleblower Babita Deokaran, who flagged irregular tenders at the hospital in 2021. Deokaran was assassinated outside her home in Winchester Hills in August of that year.

When Deokaran first flagged irregular tenders, she identified about R800 million in fraudulent activities. The SIU’s ongoing investigation has now revealed that the amount involved sits at R2 billion and that three major syndicates are behind the looting.

SIU head Advocate Andy Mothibi said one of the alleged looters, Hangwani Morgan Maumela - believed to have been working with controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala - secured over R800 million in tenders from the hospital.

Maumela’s identified assets amount to around R520 million, including luxury vehicles and properties valued at R293.4 million.

Notable properties includea R75 million property in Bantry Bay and various others in Gauteng.
