Motives for politically fuelled contract killings investigated by the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Teams are mainly linked to fraud and corruption.
Embattled Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo revealed this while testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria today.
In highlighting the successes of the task team, Khumalo outlined how they go about investigating cases.
Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo said the KZN Political Killings Task Team is successful because of its analysis-led investigative approach.
He explained that the first phase of an investigation is to determine the motive, followed by the identification of a suspect.
Khumalo said: “The contract killing has permanent stakeholders that must be there. It will be the replacement of a spotter by a name identified as a person of interest.”
According to him, when it comes to political killings, the motive is almost always the same.
Khumalo said: “In most cases where political office-bearers are attacked or killed, it will mainly be for fraud or corruption.”
Khumalo’s testimony comes at a time when he himself faces charges of fraud and corruption, following his arrest by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption.
