DURBAN - A school pupil died while two others were hospitalised after being struck by lightning in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The incident happened on Monday after central parts of the province received an alert Level 2 warning for thunderstorms and heavy rains.

The three children were reportedly on their way home from the Mandlamasha Primary School when lightning struck.

Provincial Cooperative Governance spokesperson Siboniso Mngadi said the other two other children were receiving medical care.

“KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi has expressed condolences to the family of the departed learner and wishes a speedy recovery to the two learners that are hospitalised.”

The department added that several households in the area were severely affected by strong winds.

Disaster teams are yet to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the harsh weather.

This year alone, around five people have been killed after being struck by lightning in the province.
