JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng government will now have access to almost 7,000 extra CCTV cameras across the province.

This as the government beefs up its efforts to combat rampant crime.

On Tuesday, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi signed a memorandum with private CCTV company VumaCam.

The public-private partnership between government and VumaCam will see the government gain access to CCTV cameras not only in Gauteng but also in eThekwini.

VumaCam’s chief commercial officer, Michael Varney, said their cameras were previously only utilised by private security companies.

"We will be rolling out and densifying areas in TISH areas, which stands for townships, informal settlements, and hostels, based on hotspot areas the provincial government has identified."

From just over 200 of their own CCTV cameras, VumaCam will now provide government with access to about 6,911 CCTV cameras across their network.
