JOHANNESBURG -The Gauteng Transport Department said it cannot link a shooting that left two people dead in Germiston to the ongoing taxi strike in the area.

It is alleged that two people were killed in the town, east of Johannesburg on Thursday with details surrounding the shooting still sketchy.

The strike has left hundreds of commuters stranded in Ekurhuleni, with many concerned that it will continue indefinitely.

Taxi operators are staging a stayaway, following the impounding of eight vehicles by police on Wednesday night.

Gauteng Transport Spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said, "The fact is that there are reports that there has been two fatalities in Ekurhuleni, but what we cannot confirm if the incident is related to the taxi strike."
