JOHANNESBURG - North West police have called for calm in the Ipelegeng community after two people, including an 11-year-old child, were killed during a community protest on Tuesday.
During the protest, residents pelted stones at construction workers in Extension 5 on Tuesday.
Police said residents were unhappy about not being considered for employment in the construction of a sewer pipe in the area.
Spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said during the confrontation, one of the truck drivers allegedly opened fire at the demonstrators, killing the minor and a 32-year-old man.
Two other people were injured.
"The police arrested the suspect and seized his firearm. Investigations into the incidents are underway and police are currently monitoring the situation.
"The provincial commissioner further emphasised the significance of embarking on peaceful protests to avoid undesirable situations such as this one."
