JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling for National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to resign following corruption and money laundering allegations.
She stands accused of receiving kickbacks amounting to R2.3 million during her tenure as defence minister in 2021.
On Friday, the official opposition party filed a motion of no confidence to remove her from the position, after she launched a legal challenge to stay out of jail.
DA Chief Whip in Parliament, Siviwe Gwarube, said keeping Mapisa-Nqakula in the position would be a mockery of the National Assembly.
"Our hand is forced to move this motion of no confidence so that it be debated and voted on before this term lapses. We will be reaching out to other political parties that are represented in Parliament to ask for their support in making sure we remove the Speaker."
