The mayor says the budget positions Cape Town to be the beating heart of the national economy.

CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has tabled Cape Town’s draft "Building for jobs’ budget of R76 billion for public participation.

Hill-Lewis has labeled the budget pro-poor, saying 75% of the city's R12.1 billion infrastructure budget will be spent on improving the lives of lower-income households.

The mayor says the budget positions Cape Town to be the beating heart of the national economy.

"Our record R40 billion infrastructure investment over the next three years will create 130,000 jobs just in the construction sector, and many bigger economic benefits from better infrastructure."

Hill-Lewis said the city had also allocated R1 billion to be spent on service delivery in informal settlements.
