CAPE TOWN - A police officer has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Welkom Magistrates Court for raping his ex-girlfriend.
Sergeant Kabelo Mokoena was arrested by police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) after his former girlfriend opened a case of rape against him in November 2018.
It's understood that the 41-year-old met the victim at a tavern and later asked his colleague, who was driving a state car, to drop them off at an address in Thabong in the Free State.
IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said Mokoena raped the complainant when they arrived at the house.
"The incident that happened on the 25th of November 2018 was reported to IPID and investigated as rape by a police officer, which falls under Section 28 (1) (d) of the IPID Act. The investigation led to the arrest, conviction, and sentencing of Sergeant Mokoena."
