Here's how to help firefighters and an update on hiking trails that have been closed.

Mandy Wiener speaks to Lauren Howard-Clayton, SANParks Regional Communications Manager.

Lightning strikes on Saturday (27 April) resulted in several fires in multiple areas, reported Table Mountain National Park (TMNP).

The fires are now raging for a third day.

Due to wind changes and poor visibility caused by cloudy weather, overnight flare-ups have been reported behind Newlands, Fernwood Park and on the slopes of Kirstenbosch, moving towards Orangekloof, as well as towards Maclear's Beacon and the Back Table.

Around 100 hectares have been burnt so far while over 20 people in high-risk areas have been evacuated as a safety precaution.

"It has been quite challenging for firefighters and Park staff during this period".
- Lauren Howard-Clayton, Regional Communications Manager - SANParks

Howard-Clayton also reports that 50 firefighters have been deployed to mitigate the fire from spreading further.

However, aerial sightings can't be deployed because of the wind conditions and low cloud coverage.

Howard-Clayton adds that the risk remains and hikers must avoid the area.

The following hiking trails have been closed as a result of the fires:

Cape of Good Hope

Hiking routes from Gifkommetjie to Circles Vlei and any trails originating from Olifantsbos, as well as Sirkelvlei hiking trail and Link Road cycling route closed in the Cape Of Good Hope section have been affected and are closed to hikers until further notice. Circular Drive has also been closed as a precautionary measure.

Back Table and Skeleton Gorge - Table Mountain

All footpaths leading to Back Table from Camps Bay and Hout Bay, Constantia Nek, Cecilia Forest, Kirstenbosch, Orangekloof hiking trails  have been closed.

Howard-Clayton says those who want to help can drop-off the following items at Newlands Fire Base:

  • 500 ml bottled water
  • lunch box snacks
  • hot meals
  • any other donations for firefighters

SANParks continues to provide safety updates on social media for the public to follow.
