CAPE TOWN - Former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane is set to return to Parliament as an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member of Parliament (MP) after her surprise arrival last October, a month after she was impeached.
Meanwhile, her husband David Skosana is expected to make his Parliamentary debut, but for Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe Party.
Their names are among those on the list handed to the chief justice by the Electoral Commission of South Africa on Thursday.
During her Parliamentary impeachment inquiry in 2022, Mkhwebane alleged a conflict of interest and bias against her by another set of married MPs.
In her fight for a R10 million gratuity from the Public Protector’s office, Mkhwebane told the court she had barely been making ends meet on her parliamentary salary.
Now she will return to Parliament as one of two EFF candidates from Mpumalanga.
Married couples in Parliament are nothing new, but mostly they’ve belonged to the same political party.
And the pair will not be the only couple in the house.
During her impeachment inquiry, Mkhwebane alleged long-standing Democratic Alliance (DA) MPs Natasha Mazzone and Kevin Mileham had not declared their marriage when Mazzone submitted the motion that led to the inquiry, and Mileham served on the committee deciding on her impeachment.
The new Parliament is likely to consider whether those impeached by the house should be eligible to serve as MPs after Mkhwebane’s refusal to recuse herself from an interviewing panel in March scuppered the appointment of a new Deputy Public Protector.
