CAPE TOWN - The Public Works and Infrastructure Department says that a group of homeless people who have been living outside the Castle of Good Hope have three months to vacate the property.
The department, who is the custodian of the land, has outlined the eviction process after signing court papers for the homeless to be removed from the national heritage site.
The group of about 20 people have been living outside the castle for more than two years.
Department spokesperson, Thami Mchunu, explains: "Seeing that the matter is against homeless people, it is required that the government apply for a special service date which is 31 July 2024. The purpose of the special service date is to have our papers translated into Afrikaans and isiXhosa, and also for the sheriff of the court to do loud hailing informing the occupiers about the eviction."
Mchunu said the application for the eviction would then be served in court later this year on 17 September.
