Controversial North West businessman and ANC backer Suleiman Carrim says he received threatening anonymous messages warning him not to testify before the Madlanga Commission of inquiry.

Carrim has filed an application to have his testimony, scheduled for next week, Monday and Tuesday, held in-camera.

Previous witnesses have accused him of using his political influence to assist suspected crime boss Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala in scoring a R 360-million SAPS tender.

It's also alleged that Carrim received kickbacks from Matlala as a result.

His lawyer Kameel Prehmid said his client has received threats to his life, his family and his business.

“The last message reads, and I quote: before you appear at the commission, which is this commission, we are going to show you and your iceboy. So they are saying, we are not going to wait for you to donner and skit after you go to Madlanga, we are going to do it beforehand. In the next message, it says; go to Madlanga, we are going to Madlanga, we will stay behind and take care of your staff. So we are threatening you before you go there, and when you go there, we are going to do more to you.”
