SA's tennis champ Kgothatso Montjane shines at Wimbledon

Tennis champions, Kgothatso Montjane (KG) and Yui Kamiji teamed up to win the highest honours in tennis.

They won the 2024 Wimbledon women’s wheelchair doubles final on Sunday, defeating Dutch duo Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen 6-4, 6-4.

This Wimbledon victory will be a big one for Montjane and Kamiji, who were silver finalists in last year’s competition.

The two have also bagged three 'Grand Slam' titles so far.

Friedman says Montjane has an 'interesting' and 'inspiring' story.

"It's a big deal... onwards and upwards to her, it's so interesting to hear her story."

"She grew up in Limpopo, raised mostly by her gran, uncles and aunts and just the role they played in helping her cope with her disability is amazing... she was born with a congenital disorder and when she was 12, she had her one leg amputated below the knee... she then went to a special needs school and got involved in tennis in matric which she was brilliant at."
