CoJ to start phase 2 of Lilian Ngoyi Street construction project in CBD

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg will now begin phase two of the Lilian Ngoyi Street construction project in the CBD, following the completion of road repairs.

While the first phase focused on restoring the road, the second phase will concentrate on enhancing the precinct’s visual appeal.

The corridor was reopened to traffic on Friday, more than two years after it was damaged by an underground gas explosion.

The City of Johannesburg has spent over R90 million reconstructing Lilian Ngoyi Street after it was split in the middle by a gas pipeline explosion.

Of the allocated budget, R110 million remains and will be directed towards phase two of the project.

This next phase will focus on beautifying the precinct, including planting greenery, installing street furniture, and other improvements to enhance its visual appeal.

A local business owner operating along Lilian Ngoyi Street said the reopening will allow his business to return to normal operations.

"I feel very good. It’s really amazing and there are just minor things left. They did a very good job and it took them more than two years."

The total cost of the project amounts to R192 million, covering both phases.
