NPA to oppose bail for man accused of killing Empangeni girl

DURBAN - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it would oppose bail in the case of a man linked to the disappearance and murder of a seven-year-old girl in Empangeni, in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Zanokuhle Khumalo was found dead at a neighbour's house a day after she was kidnapped at the Dumisane Makhaye Village.
A male suspect was nabbed after he was found hiding at a bed and breakfast on Tuesday.
Police said that the suspect accused of kidnapping Zanokuhle Khumalo and killing her after she was raped was known to the family.
He is said to have called the family and informed them about the incident and even told them where to look.
He made his first court appearance on Thursday.
NPA spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara: "The 33-year-old man appeared in court on charges of kidnapping in court on charges of kidnapping, rape, and murder. The matter was remanded to the 7th of August 2024. The State will be opposing bail."
Meanwhile, the uMhlathuze Local Municipality has condemned the gruesome act, calling for harsh punishment from the law.
