CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) mayors say they are ready to challenge a whopping 40% increase in the cost of electricity next year.
They said they had already begun the process by sending off their written opposition and founding arguments to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).
The caucus of mayors argued that another double-digit tariff increase would worsen food poverty levels.
DA spokesperson, Willie Aucamp, said the increase could have a reverse impact on Eskom’s coffers if consumers reduced consumption to such a point that it made less revenue than before the price hikes.
"In the past, these double-digit increases led to people having to choose whether to have a light at their table or food on their tables. This position will just worsen and South Africans just can’t afford this."
Aucamp said the DA would leave no stone unturned in challenging the outrageous application.
"We’ve already asked for a debate of national importance on this matter, and we will pursue all available legal avenues to prevent this from happening."
