On Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill into law.
This bill has sparked heated debates with many organisations and parties, including Solidarity and Afriforum, pushing back against it.

The president has hit pause on two clauses of the bill, giving three months for urgent discussion.
Kriel says the new language policies in these clauses could threaten Afrikaans-speaking schools and communities.
“The only place where our culture can survive is in Afrikaans schools. This is threatening our survival.”

He says they want to find a solution that suits all children without attacking Afrikaans or destroying their schools.
He adds that they are ready to go to court if an agreement is not reached in the next three months.
