DURBAN - Eight suspected criminals have been shot dead in another shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
It’s understood the group was on its way to rob a shop in Richards Bay when they were stopped in their tracks overnight.
The gang opened fire at the officers who then retaliated during a high-speed chase on the highway.
KZN police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda:
“The driver ignored the police’s lawful instructions and sped off. A high-speed vehicle chase ensued, and the suspects started firing shots towards the police. Police returned fire and during the shootout, eight suspects were shot and fatally wounded.”
He said the group was also linked to a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery which took place in a nearby community recently.
“The suspects, who were also linked with a recent cash-in-transit robbery which happened at the Mzingazi area, were found in possession of three firearms, two replica guns and house-breaking implements investigations are underway to ascertain if the firearms are linked to other crimes scenes."
