Prolonged rainfall in the province has contributed to several accidents.
The department said that scholar transport vehicles must be roadworthy and meet the standards set out by among other bodies, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
"The MEC has indicated that as a result of prolonged rainfall that has created havoc in the KwaZulu-Natal, we have seen road crashes and fatalities that are close to 300. The MEC has deployed a team of competent examiners to inspect scholar transport as we know that schools are re-opening on Wednesday. The MEC wants to ensure the safety of learners in various parts of the province," said department spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya.
