Relebogile Mabotja speaks with Moosa Abdur Rahman Mkhize, Educator at the Centre of Islamic Studies in Pretoria.
Listen below:
In the next 50 years or so, Christianity may lose its status as the largest religion in the world.
As of 2010, Christianity has an estimated 2.2 billion adherents globally, accounting for 31% of the world’s population at the time.
Islam was second with 1.6 billion adherents.
A recent report projects that the Muslim population of the world will grow twice as fast as the overall world population between 2015 and 2060.
This means Muslims are likely to surpass Christians as the largest religious group.
The main reason for this growth is that Muslim families have more children on average, compared to other major religious groups.
