CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government says it remains committed to providing social housing in well-located areas.
This after the Constitutional Court reserved judgment related to the Tafelberg school site is Sea Point.
Housing activists, Reclaim the City, initially hauled the provincial government to the high court in 2017 for selling the land instead of using the site for social housing.
The matter has since been heard in the supreme court before ending up in the Constitutional Court on Monday.
Plans are underway to use the site for social services, with a portion earmarked for affordable housing.
Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers: "The Western Cape government is dedicated to using its assets to provide affordable housing in well-located areas where this is a reasonable and prudent use of the asset. Earlier this year, we announced the proposed plan for affordable housing and social services on the Tafelberg site, and we remain steadfast in this commitment."
