Police have cleared demonstrators during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s title deeds handover event in KwaZulu-Natal.
Ramaphosa handed over title deeds to communities and families forcefully removed during the apartheid era.
The government said that this is done as a measure to address past injustices.
But during the event, demonstrators staged a silent protest inside the venue.
During his speech at the handover ceremony, President Cyril Ramaphosa was nearly disrupted by a group of disgruntled community members.
The group held up placards raising various concerns related to land ownership and compensation for apartheid era atrocities.
Protesters attempted to charge towards the podium, but public order police officers entered the venue and intercepted the group.
MEC Sipho Hlomuka was the program director.
“The land affairs department has an office situated here, it can attend to other issues, because not all issues will be dealt with today, but because the government is big, there is no matter will be isolated, but we shouldn’t disrupt such a good event.”
The KwaZulu-Natal government has since called on the president to ensure that all former dispossessed people are helped across the province.
