CAPE TOWN - South African police say they've arrested at least 20 drug traffickers at OR Tambo International Airport alone in the past six months.

Recent drug busts include the arrest of two South Africans with cocaine worth around R7.5 million at the OR Tambo International Airport.

A 55-year-old Nigerian drug mule, who had swallowed multiple objects suspected to be bullets containing cocaine, was also nabbed at the same airport this week.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola led the destruction of nearly a tonne of drugs at an undisclosed location in Cape Town on Friday.

General Fannie Masemola said that the various types of drugs worth more than R340 million were seized in police operations in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces.

He said that the days of using OR Tambo International Airport as a gateway for drug trafficking were coming to an end.

"On Wednesday last week, R6m worth of cocaine, which was disguised as hair products, was also seized at one of the warehouses next to OR Tambo International Airport. The shipment was from Brazil to France via South Africa."

The police commissioner added that two suspects linked to this raid had since been arrested.
