CAPE TOWN - Residents from Blikkiesdorp, Malawi Camp, and Freedom Farm in Cape Town are excited to see the ACSA Symphony Way Housing Project finally get off the ground again.
The half-a-billion rand project launched in 2018 was halted several times over the years over extortion threats and a death of City of Cape Town official, Wendy Kloppers, in 2023.
The city’s human settlements MMC, Carl Pophaim, said security had been beefed up to protect contractors and officials working on site.
Pophaim hopes to have the first phase of the project finished in the next two years.
Pophaim said the municipality aimed to build 3,600 housing units to benefit more than 8,000 people from Blikkiesdorp, Malawi Camp, and Freedom Farm.
Blikkiesdorp resident, Ursula Felkers, told EWN that they were delighted to see the project finally getting underway.
"This is an exciting feeling because our people are going to have dignified homes, and our kids are going to have a place to call home. So, it’s an exciting feeling for our people in terms of moving forward. It was such a long waiting time and when the project first launched sad things have happened."
She said they were looking forward to being part of the Delft community.
