SARS pays R447 billion in refunds to taxpayers

The tax agency says the refunds paid represent a growth of 8%.

JOHANNESBURG – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has paid a record R447 billion in refunds to taxpayers during the 2024/25 financial year.

This is the highest ever amount paid in refunds.

SARS announced its preliminary revenue outcome on Tuesday.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter says a gross amount of R2.3 trillion was collected before refunds were paid.

He said it “is 6,9% higher than prior year and R8,8 billion above the revised estimate. Refunds of R447,8 billion is 8,2% higher than the prior year and R3 billion above the revised estimate”.
