CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Mobility Department is unable to grant any more operating licenses to e-hailing drivers.
This comes as the department's quota of licenses has been reached.
MMC for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, said there was no confirmation when more licenses could be granted.
“The City’s Transport Regulations Management branch met with the PRE on the 2 April 2025 to discuss the metered taxi supply and demand numbers. We are not in a position yet to confirm any number as additional factors to be considered were raised during the discussion, which the team is now attending to.”
Quintas says no licenses will be granted until further notice.
“The City and the Western Cape Government will wait until the National Land Transport Amendment Act (NLTAA) and the Regulations are promulgated into law before we communicate the way forward in terms of the Operating License numbers for metered taxi services.”
