DURBAN - The grandson of Chief Albert Luthuli believes the late African National Congress (ANC) struggle stalwart was assassinated and did not die as a result of an accident, as claimed by the apartheid government.

Luthuli died in 1967, with the official records from the apartheid government saying he was hit by a steam train.

An inquest is currently underway at the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) High Court in Pietermaritzburg, where the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is seeking to overturn the initial findings on Luthuli’s cause of death.

The anti-apartheid activist’s grandson, Mthunzi Luthuli, was on the stand testifying in the inquest on Thursday.

He said the family refused to believe there was any credibility to the former government's account on how Luthuli died.

"I wish for these facts to be presented at the reopening of the inquest for purposes of establishing the truth as to what happened to the late Luthuli and for those responsible for this gruesome murder and assassination to be held responsible together with any reparations that may be due in the interest of justice."
