The man accused of his murder, Manelisi Mampane, who is also a residence manager at the institution, made his first court appearance on Tuesday.
He's charged with murder, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
The Mthatha Magistrates Court ruled that the media was prohibited from recording or photographing proceedings due to a domestic matter.
The EFF's Sihle Lonzi said this would take away transparency from the case.
"We don’t buy the argument that this was a domestic, therefore the media must not be able to broadcast to the people of South Africa and show them what it is that happened at Walter Sisulu University."
